History
The History of Northminster
In 1938 the Church Foundation of Indianapolis designated the area
where Northminster is located as an area for Presbyterian development.
At a Presbytery meeting on June 24th 1945, Northminster was officially
named and 120 charter members were received. Worship services were
held at several different locations during the early years. Rev.
Raymond Cloyd Downs was installed on September 30th, 1945, as the
first pastor. A succession of pastors includes Raymond Downs, Richard Williams,
Wilber Closterhouse, A. Howard Lindquist, C. Frederick Mathias, Ron Smith (an unusual
5 year interim), and our current pastor, Dr. Teri Thomas. There
have been a number of associate pastors during this period.
The congregation moved into their first building on Sunday, December
7, 1947 and into the present sanctuary in March of 1957. There have
been several additions to the facilities including a manse that
was later sold and moved to another property. This move was done
to make space for the present education and office wing.
The congregation grew at a rapid rate during the 1950’s and
is currently around 1000 members. There has been no easing in the
mission of the church. Mission trips to Mexico, annually clothing
approximately 100 needy children at Christmas, sponsoring School
55 with materials, tutoring, reading support, and many other community
programs. During 2003 we inaugurated a Jazz worship service which
has been well received. In addition, Northminster has a well-regarded
Day School and Mother’s Day Out program that has been successful
for many years.
Our present ministerial staff of Dr. Teri Thomas, Ruth Moore, and
Larry Moslener continue to challenge us to grow in our faith and
to bring others into the fellowship of Christ at Northminster.
