Speaking the Truth in Love

Speaking the truth in love. It sounds nice and wonderful.
But let’s be honest, it is very difficult and often painful.

The Book of Eli sermon

We have trouble imagining killing someone in order to get a copy of the Bible. We also have trouble imagining dying to protect one. Is that because we have too many? After all, we have lots of Bibles sitting on shelves gathering dust. Or is it because we don’t fully comprehend its power?

Excess in a time of scarcity

That is really what this story from John is all about.
The wedding is running out of wine and Jesus responds
with joy and generosity and abundance
six jars- 30 gallons per jar- 180 gallons of really good wine
Jesus responds with excessive joy,
excessive generosity,
excessive abundance

Let the Spirit Loose

When I was in seminary we had a class called “Practical Ministry”. It was a class where we practiced things we would have to do for real some day. We practiced communion, breaking bread and pouring. We practiced counseling with role plays. And one week we practiced the sacrament of baptism....

Longing

When you wait for something, you usually expect that you will get what you wait for, although that doesn’t always happen. To me longing implies that maybe you won’t get what you are longing for, at least not for a long time.

Hear the Word and Act

Hey, it is done! Well, ok, it isn’t exactly done, but it is done enough to dedicate, and it is done enough to celebrate. It was quite a week around here finishing up a million details, cleaning, furniture arriving, carpeting going down and ceiling tiles going up. Lots of people have been very busy- construction crews, church members, staff and people we pulled in off the street...

Faithfulness for the Faithless

Waiting...

It must be a fairly common part of the human condition. Scripture is filled with stories of people waiting. Waiting for freedom, waiting for rain, waiting for healing, waiting for a messiah...

Back to the Future

The Ruth from the Bible is an example for me on how to live my life. This Ruth is not just a caricature of womanly piety or a model of femininity—which is good, because I don’t fit that model very well. Instead, I would describe her as substantial, complicated and someone who seeks out meaning in her life with a kind of quiet resolve. She plays a very substantial role in God’s plan for Israel and God’s plan for redemption for all of us.

A Time to Trust

Trust is needy. Trust is eager. Trust is assertive. Trust is hopeful. Trust is impetuous and persistent and risky and raw. Trust is personal and relational. Trust is about God doing for us what we cannot do for ourselves, and about us, out of dumbstruck gratitude, doing for God what only we can do. Most of all, trust often leads us to places we would just as soon not go . . .

Our Place at the Table

When I was living and working in Washington DC I had a monthly breakfast meeting with the regional leaders of the various denominations.

One month we were meeting at the offices of the Roman Catholic archdiocese. Our host was the local Cardinal. We were all ushered into a very formal sitting room where chairs had been arranged in a circle. I walked across the room and took a seat. A few minutes later the Cardinal’s assistant came into the room and told us that the Cardinal was not well and would be unable to join us but the assistant would be our host. He then came to me and whispered in my ear that I was sitting in the Cardinal’s chair ...
