Church School

Christian Education

Northminster provides a variety of Christian Education opportunities for children, youth and adults. This year, Christian Education at Northminster Presbyterian Church will follow the Lectionary calendar from the pulpit to Children's Time, to the Sunday Church School classroom for ages 3 through adult. We have adopted "Seasons of the Spirit", a reformed international lectionary-based Church School curriculum that "builds strong faith communities by centering the ministries of Christian education, worship and service around common scriptures each week." Through use of activities, discussion, current events and the arts, we hope to be "on the same page" together each week. You may preview our curriculum at Seasons of the Spirit or by stopping by the Christian Education office.

Church School in January

January 1 Focus Scripture Matthew 2: 1-12 On this Epiphany Sunday, the Church School will consider what are our individual and community gifts and how can we share them and follow that “star?”

January 8 Focus Scripture Mark 1:4-11 Jesus hears God’s voice at his baptism. How do we respond to the Holy Spirit calling us to new directions in our own lives?

January 15 Focus Scripture 1 Samuel 3: 1-10 (11-20)The children of the Church School will consider the story of Samuel and his call from God. What does it mean to be called , to understand the meaning of that call and to live into that call in our community of Northminster?

January 22 Focus Scripture Mark 1: 14-20 Jesus will call the fishermen to come and follow him in our story this Sunday. We will consider what it means to listen, to follow and how that call can change over time. What is God calling us to do?

January 29 Focus Scripture Mark 1: 21-28 We will learn that Jesus was recognized as a powerful teacher and healer who builds community. He spoke and acted with an amazing power that came from God. How does this power of God’s love impact us as the people of Northminster?

Church School in February

February 5, 2012 Focus Scripture Mark 1:29-39 In these 10 verses, Jesus visits a home, heals an ill woman, is served by that woman, faces the “whole city,” cures the sick, casts out demons, sleeps, gets up early, goes to the wilderness to pray, is found by the disciples, goes forward to new places and continues to proclaim the gospel and casting out demons. How can we do these things, too?

February 12 Focus Scripture Mark 1:40-45 Christ’s compassion for others is revealed in the story of Jesus and the person with leprosy. What can we do to include folks in our community of Northminster?

February 19 Focus Scripture Mark 9:2-9 We will talk about the “thin places”---that line between the holy and the ordinary as we hear about what happened on that mountaintop when Jesus was transfigured. How can we be present in those thin place moments that are given to us?

February 26 Focus Scripture Genesis 9: 8-17 As Lent begins, the church school will consider the story of Noah. It will be the first of God’s promises we will explore during this Season. Water cleanses and heals. Through water we are rescued. How can we take part in God’s promise of renewal for all creation?

Church School Mission

We are very engaged in raising funds for Heifer Project. Children continue to give gifts through the Milk Pail every Sunday and will vote by class on the animals we will purchase at the end of the school year.  This past summer, the Northminster VBS kids and the entire Northminster congregation helped raise $7000 for Heifer in Kenya at the school communities that are part of our lunch program there. Our check was sent to Kenya through the Interfaith Hunger Initiative. Your gifts through the Milk Pail, the Quarter Tube, the Lemonade stands, anonymously given with love, publicly given with love and lots of Noise (thanks to Pastor Teri), birthday cash, and all that change in your cars and homes allowed the Church School and the VBS kids to send a really BIG gift to Kenya to help other families pass on the gift! The Church School will be able to support more goats, chickens and gardens and the training Heifer gives the people in those communities.  Thank you and bless you!

Wednesday Night Kids are working on Dental Kits for Ronald McDonald House at Riley Hospital this month. Everyone from ages two through Middle School is participating! Thanks to the congregation for all the donations of toothpaste, floss, mouthwash and toothbrushes!

Many families in our city are hungry. Please join the children of Northminster in bringing protein-rich foods like canned tuna, soup, and peanut butter to church for our food barrel. The Deacons will take these offerings to Westminster Neighborhood Association Food Pantry.

Church School Registration

It's easy to register your children and youth online (click here) for Church School. We need current, correct information on all children from birth - age 18. There are forms available at church.
