Our Future is Now Frequently Asked Questions

How has the new construction affected Northminster?
Folks gather in the Gathering Place prior to and after each service; they stay at Church longer and enjoy the fellowship of members. The Gathering Place provides space for receptions and informal get-togethers. The expanded youth space serves our growing youth programs. The heating, cooling and electrical systems are significantly improved in efficiency. We have more parking and our facilities are more accessible to all. The expanded chancel and new chancel furnishings enhance worship.

Why are we having a second campaign?

Is more construction planned?
We have completed all construction and renovation. The purpose of the second campaign is to pay down our debt and interest.

How much has the construction cost?
The price of construction, furnishings, architect, and all other expenses associated with building and renovation has been approximately $4.5 million.

If we only raised $2.7 million in the Open to the Future Campaign, why did we spend so much more?
We could have built in small steps, completing as much as we had money for, essentially a ‘pay as you go’ method. However, the total cost of the project usually rises with this approach, and the disruption of building is stretched out over an extended period of time.

Is this the last capital campaign?
We don’t know. If we could raise $2.5 million in this campaign we would be finished. We are more likely to raise $1.5 million according to the experts. In that case we will need to consider our options at the completion of this campaign. We could have a third campaign; we could put the loan payments into the church operating budget; or we could decide some other strategy based on the amount still owed, the financial health of the congregation, and the state of the economy at that time.

Is there a mission component to this campaign?
Yes. 10% of our campaign contributions will go to mission work.

Will I be expected to make a pledge?
No. Participation in the campaign and how much you give are entirely up to you. Everyone will be given the opportunity to contribute as they feel led by God to do so.

How long will my commitment be?
You are asked to make a three-year commitment.

I’m currently making contributions to the Open to the Future Campaign. Can I just continue on with this new campaign?
Yes! The Open to the Future three-year pledges were from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2010. Simply fill out the Commitment Card with the amount you have been contributing, and your gift will continue without interruption from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2013.

When are we expected to give the amount pledged?
Pledge cards will be turned in on Commitment Sunday, October 31, and pledges will begin to be received shortly thereafter.

What if my circumstances change after I have made a pledge?
A commitment card is a statement of intent, not a contract. If your financial circumstances change significantly, your giving should also change. Simply contact the church to adjust your commitment – letting the church know about the change (increase, decrease, or timing) in your giving.
