Friends of the Dead

I was driving down Michigan Road the other morning and at the corner of Michigan and 38th Street I stopped for a light.  Glancing across the intersection I saw the big Crown Hill sign on the corner.  It read-  Look for us on Facebook.

I laughed the rest of the way downtown.  Who wants to "friend" a cemetery?  Do you post on a head stone instead of a wall?  What kind of updates do you get from the down under?  Does your status ever change after you're dead?

When I got back to the church I was reading the scripture for this coming Sunday from Hebrews.  It is about the great cloud of witnesses that surrounds us as we race through our lives.  I thought again of Crown Hill and all those dead friends and I decided there is really a sermon in here.  I will let you know Sunday at 9:00 and 11:00 what I came up with.  Let me know if you have any suggestions.

I saw that sign, too, and thought - wow - Facebook for Zombies.

Now I'm thinking of the Faulkner quote from Requium for a Nun - "The past is never dead. It is not even past." I like to think of my faith as evolving, but I know I am carrying portions of Christian faith that belonged to many people in my family and my childhood. Is that a good thing? Maybe... but maybe not.
