Holy Saturday

Holy Saturday is a time of darkness, disquiet, heaviness.  In our creed this is the time we say Jesus descended into hell.  Some churches leave that line out of the Apostle’s Creed.  They do not believe that Jesus, being sinless, could go to hell.  But that is not the point.

Jesus was not sent to hell.  Jesus went to hell.  Jesus came into the world to rescue sinners- all of us- even those already gone.  Jesus had to suffer everything we might suffer.  Jesus had to experience all that we might experience.  Jesus went into the place of the dead so that we know there is no place where he cannot reach us.  Jesus went to hell to show us that we are never beyond his reach.  Never.  Absolutely never.
