Wednesday, October 4

Christianity for Adults

Time: 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Beginning on September 27, Northminster member Don Knebel will present a series of six classes he calls "Christianity for Adults." His goal is to show people, including young people, that they can be unapologetically Christians without being forced to believe things they see as impossible in light of twenty-first-century realities. The series is deeply rooted in the actual teachings of Jesus but includes things that people were not often taught in Sunday School. He will pay close attention to what it means to be a Matthew 25 Congregation.

The first presentation, "Who Was Jesus, Really?" will seek to discover what some have called the "Jesus of History."

Northminster Presents: Lauren Lancaster

Time: 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Infant/Maternal Mortality in Indiana

The United States has the worst infant mortality rate of all the world's developed nations, three times higher than Japan's. Even worse news for us is that Indiana has the 10th worst rate of all states. If you think this is bad, the maternal mortality rate in the U.S. is the worst of all developed nations and Indiana is 3rd among all states. This places our home state as one of the worst environments on this issue in the world.

Come in person to the Sanctuary or by live-streaming to learn more about this vital topic presented by Lauren Lancaster.

Lauren Lancaster | Bio

Lauren is a member of our church and has bachelor's and master's degrees in public health policy. She has participated in health policies with Indiana's Family & Social Services Administration and IUPUI. Lauren is currently a part of the Indiana Minority Health Coalition and serves as a statewide Maternal/Child Health Manager for the Coalition, serving minority healthcare disparities and speaking up for the underserved.

The Jeremiahs

"The Jeremiahs is an Irish folk band that comprises four musicians who have come together with the common goal of writing, composing and performing folk songs and music.  They have travelled extensively,  bringing their music far and wide and are heralded as a live band not to be missed. With a wonderful mixture of  newly composed songs and tunes in the folk genre and a well selected catalogue of older folk songs, they are sure to rouse all the emotions.

Hailing from County Dublin is singer Joe Gibney on vocals. On fiddle, viola and vocals is County Cork’s Niamh Varian-Barry (formerly of Solas).  On flutes and whistles is the French born Julien Bruneteau and on Guitar is Dublin born James Ryan." (The Jeremiahs)

Spirit & Place: Byakula Volunteers

Time: 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Northminster is excited to partner with Exodus Refugee Immigration to present a program as part of the Spirit & Place Festival entitled “Byakula: Nourishing Others from the Congo to Indy” on Sunday, November 5th, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm in Calvin Hall. (Byakula is the Congolese word for “nourish” which is the theme of this year’s Spirit & Place Festival.)

We hope to welcome over 50 members of the community to learn more about the work of Exodus bringing refugees from many countries around the world. Helene Lutumika, a Northminster member, will speak about the continuing unrest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and her family’s experience as refugees in Burundi, their arrival here in Indianapolis, and their continuing life as Hoosiers. Salima Lutumika will prepare several Congolese dishes for attendees to taste.

We are hoping that Northminster members will be interested in supporting this program as Volunteers. Responsibilities are listed below and a link is available to sign-up to volunteer during the program, which will permit you to help with, as well as hear/taste/experience this event.

Food Pantry Volunteering

Time: 12:00 am – 12:00 am

Volunteer with us! As summer comes to an end, we need volunteers to help work our regular pantry hours on Mondays and Thursdays. We also urgently need volunteers to do guided shopping with our neighbors for Senior Pantry days on the third Wednesday of each month. Westminster runs on volunteers! Each year, people like you donate hundreds of hours in support of our mission on the Near Eastside of Indianapolis. Volunteers allow us to serve the thousands of neighbors who come through our door to utilize our food pantry and soup kitchen.

Bring your family, bring your coworkers, or just bring yourself! Spend a Monday or Thursday morning with us, helping families in need.

Wednesday, November 15

Join us either in person in the board room or via Zoom using the link below.
