Biography

Blake Schlabach has been part of the Indianapolis community since the fall of 1982.  After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Music Performance from DePauw University, he joined the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s trombone section, where he currently is performing as the section’s Acting Principal Trombone since 2017. 

As a respected studio recording artist, he has performed on many recording sessions including movie soundtracks as well as many other genres.  An avid jazz fan, he is an accomplished jazz improvisor and frequently appears with local artists as well as the University of Indianapolis Jazz Faculty in rehearsals and concerts.  Schlabach has been the teacher of record at UIndy since 2005 in both classical and jazz performance. 

Schlabach’s private teaching studio has been an active part of the Indianapolis music scene since the mid 1980’s, working with many talented students of all ages from North Central High School, Lawrence North and Lawrence Central High Schools, Park Tudor, Eastwood Middle School and many others.  

A frequent guest clinician at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, Schlabach has also taught as the teacher of record at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music as a guest lecturer in trombone performance for two full semesters.
