Significance of Juneteenth and the Presbytery of Whitewater Valley

The word Juneteenth is short for “June Nineteenth” and is the oldest commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.

On Wednesday, June 9, the Presbytery of Whitewater Valley made a presentation on the history of Juneteenth.  This session also included how the Indianapolis community is commemorating this historic and significant moment in U.S. History.  Learn how you can engage in the work of the Presbytery related to justice, equity, inclusion, and antiracism.  Listed below are four documents for review:

2)      Juneteenth Celebration in Indiana

3)      Juneteenth Freedom Day – Prayer Devotional

4)      Creating a Culture for 365 Dismantling Structural Racism

Another momentous fete was made on Wednesday, June 16 as the House passed legislation that would establish June 19 as “Juneteenth National Independence Day,” a U.S. federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.  The bill will be sent to President Biden’s desk for his signature.
