REQUIEMS AND ALLELUIAS
Sunday, March 22, 2020
The Northminster Chancel Choir and orchestra will present a concert entitled Requiems and Alleluias at 4:00 pm on Sunday, March 22nd. This free concert features two Vivaldi motets and Michael Haydn’s Requiem. The younger brother of Classical giant Franz Joseph Haydn, Michael Haydn (1737 - 1806) lived and worked in Salzburg for most of his life, where he was employed as the court composer and music director for the Archbishop. Michael Haydn composed music in every genre, devoting his best energies to sacred repertoire. He wrote 38 masses, 6 Te Deums, and 3 Requiems. Mozart attended the first 3 performances of Haydn’s Requiem in C minor, and is believed to have been strongly influenced by it in the composition of his own Requiem written a few years later.
Known in music history as the “Red-headed Priest” (il Prete Rosso), Antonio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741) was a violinist virtuoso. He worked for 30 years as a teacher and composer in Venice at La Pieta, an orphanage for girls from illegitimate births or destitute families. In his 2 motets for soprano and orchestra, Nulla in mundo pax sincere (In all this world there is no honest peace) and In furore iustissimae irae (In wrath and most just anger), Vivaldi treats the voice like an instrumental showcase. The singer must sing rapid sixteenth note scalar figures and make large leaps throughout.
Joining us to demonstrate these vocal calisthenics is soprano Sherezade Panthaki (see photo), an exciting singer who is enjoying international success in the music of the Baroque and beyond. Of her passionate interpretations, the New York Times states she mines “deep emotion from the subtle shaping of the lines.” The Los Angeles Times claims she possesses “a full, luxuriously toned upper range.”
Shorter works in the concert are George Frederick Handel’s well known Zadok the Priest and Eliza Gilkyson’s Requiem.
