Jesus and the Disinherited by Howard Thurman.  In this classic work, theologian and religious leader Howard Thurman demonstrates how the gospel may be read as a manual of resistance for the poor and disenfranchised. Thurman reveals that Jesus is a partner in the pain of the oppressed. It is believed that Martin Luther King, Jr. carried this book with him at all times - and that it deeply influenced his writing of the Letter from the Birmingham Jail.

The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin.  A national bestseller when it first appeared in 1963, this book galvanized the nation and gave passionate voice to the emerging civil rights movement.  It consists of two "letters," written on the occasion of the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation. Baldwin's classic is as urgent today as it was when it was written.
